The NHL free agency period starts at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on 1 July every year. That will be 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time, 5:00 p.m. United Kingdom time, and 9:30 p.m. India time. At this point, unrestricted free agents have the ability to sign with any of the 32 teams, and their old club gets nothing in return. The following opening date is 1 July 2027. The date has remained the same since two decades ago except on two occasions. This is the offseason schedule surrounding the date, definitions of the types of free agents, and modifications by the new CBA.

What Actually Happens at Noon on 1 July:
All the players go on the market at the same time. All the free agents who have not signed a new deal become available to all clubs at once, and the early signings usually get announced right away.
That kind of speed needs some explanation, as it confuses new viewers. Those kinds of negotiations don’t take 90 seconds. They’ve been in talks for weeks, and most of the deals are settled before the window even opens. What takes place at noon is just that the paperwork is legal now, not the negotiations. This day even has its own name in hockey. TSN has called it Free Agent Frenzy for years now, and the name has caught on across the game.
The Full NHL Offseason Calendar:
Free agency does not sit in isolation. Several deadlines cluster around it, and they determine who is actually available on 1 July.
- 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final: The buyout window opens. Clubs can buy out a player’s remaining contract, spreading a reduced cap hit over twice the remaining term.
- Late June: The NHL Entry Draft. Trades made here often clear cap space that funds free agency signings days later.
- 30 June, 5:00 p.m. ET: The buyout window closes. Teams that miss this deadline are stuck with the contract.
- 1 July, 12:00 noon ET: Free agency opens.
- 5 July, 5:00 p.m. ET: Deadline for eligible restricted free agents to elect salary arbitration.
- 20 July to 1 August: Arbitration hearings take place.
There is also a secondary buyout window. If a player files for arbitration and the case is settled, the club can receive a further 48-hour window in which to buy him out.
The Free Agent Categories Explained:
Not every player whose contract expires becomes freely available, and the distinction is where most confusion sits.
Group 3 Unrestricted Free Agents:
This is the primary classification and what is intended when one refers to free agency. The requirements for qualifying are either that he must be at least 27 years old or have completed seven full seasons in the NHL. He is able to sign wherever he likes, and his former club does not receive anything in exchange. The requirement for age is quite a recent addition. Prior to the collective bargaining agreement signed in 2005, players would normally be at least 31 years old before they could become unrestricted.
Group 2 Restricted Free Agents:
These are players under early or entry-level deals who are restricted. The club has their rights only if they make a qualifying offer to the player. Another team may be able to sign him by making an offer sheet to the player, but the original team can match that offer sheet. It is rarely done, and most restricted free agents end up going to arbitration.
Group 6 Unrestricted Free Agents:
The other group is a much smaller one, consisting of those that have three seasons of professional hockey under their belt but have played in very few NHL games. This is to ensure that players who have spent their entire careers in the minor leagues are not indefinitely tied down to a club.
Players Who Are Not Qualified:
A restricted free agent whose team chooses not to extend a qualifying offer automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent. Every year on July 1st, the National Hockey League releases the complete list of the players in both categories, and the latter tends to be more valuable.
What the New CBA Changed:
The labor agreement signed in 2025 didn’t alter the date, but did change what teams could do once the trading window opened.
The maximum length of contracts was reduced. A team re-signing its own player is allowed to give him seven years, whereas previously, this was eight. A team that wants to sign an outside player may give him six years, while previously, he could get seven. The difference between re-signing and trading players is still on purpose maintained at two years.
The minimum salary for the league increased to 850,000 US dollars in 2026-27, and is projected to hit 900,000 in 2027-28, 950,000 in 2028-29, and one million dollars in 2029-30.
Lastly, the move of the season’s start to late September makes the summer schedule easier. With the Cup awarded in late June, the draft and free agency immediately followed. Now that the season ends in mid-June, there is some breathing space.
Has Free Agency Ever Started on a Different Date:
This has happened twice in fairly recent memory, for specific reasons. The coronavirus pandemic forced the 2020 playoffs to go into late September, with free agency starting only on 9 October. The 2022 season saw the start date pushed from 1 July to 13 July. But apart from those anomalies, July 1 at noon EST has been the date around which the offseason revolves for 20 years.
Final Take:
The NHL’s Free Agency period opens at 12:00 noon Eastern time on July 1, while the next Free Agency period is due to open on July 1, 2027. While unrestricted free agents can play for any team, restricted free agents remain bound to their teams via qualifying offers, while the buyout period preceding it determines the free agents. For those new to it, the speed of things is the key factor. Players signed in the first ten minutes have been signed days before. It is the signing that causes the rush, not the negotiations.
